Finding Value: Social Network Recommendations

My camera mysteriously stopped working a few weeks ago.  After sending it back to Casio and having them not honor my warranty (I won’t get into it here, but if you want the details, I’ll tell you), I have decided that I’ll probably have to buy a new camera.  My hand feels lost without one.

With all this social media at my finger tips, I decided to get some feedback from friends (Facebook) and followers (Twitter).  I put the message below out to both the networks and as you can see in the Facebook example, I had some quality feedback almost immediately!

This is very interesting because instead of going to some camera site and reading reviews from random editors/consumers, I am getting great recommendations from people I know and respect. It’s safe to say I’m leaning towards a Canon. They must be doing something right. Word of mouth is still the strongest advertising…

Thanks for all the advice!

WE RECOMMEND:

  • Hey what's up everyone? I ended up going with the Canon SD750 (http://flickr.com/cameras/canon/powershot_sd750/) Thanks again for the advice!
  • Basically, I had a Casio EX-S880. It took some great pictures, and I was also very impressed with the videos. But (and this is a big "but"), it flaked out and stopped working one day. The lens extended when I turned the camera on, it made a few noises, then retracted and turned off. I sent it to Casio and they "fixed" it under their 1 year warranty. It worked again for a month or so and the same problem popped up again. I sent it back because it was still about 7 months from the original purchase date, but they didn't honor it this time. They said it had a scratch on it that showed misuse - but it looked identical to the first time I sent it in. They offered to sell me a refurb model of the same camera for another $200. No way. Why would I pay another $200 for a camera that broke on me twice? I told them to send me back my broken camera.

I'm going to have to agree with Ryan... It would be interesting to see why I shouldn't go down the Casio route!!
  • That is a really cool example of the the web and social tools may help drive a commercial decision. We need more examples like this!

I have a Canon PowerShot SD630 Digital Elph w/ 6.0 megapixels and it is awesome. Great camera for the price!

I still think you should blog about how Casio F'd you!
